This calculator estimates profit, loss, and ROI on a single crypto trade — buy price, sell price, investment amount, and exchange fees in, dollar and percentage results out. It is a planning tool, not tax or financial advice.

Methodology

The calculator applies your exchange fee percentage on both the buy and sell leg, then compares net proceeds to your original investment to compute profit/loss, ROI, and the exact break-even sell price. All figures are estimates and exclude taxes, slippage, and withdrawal fees.

How to Calculate Crypto Profit and Loss

Calculating profit on a crypto trade sounds simple — sell price minus buy price — but two things trip people up: exchange fees on both sides of the trade, and forgetting that ROI is a percentage of your original investment, not of the coin's price move. This calculator handles both. Enter your buy price, sell price (or the current live price for an unrealized position), investment amount, and the fee percentage your exchange charges, and it returns your exact dollar profit or loss, ROI, and the break-even price you need to hit before you are in the green.

The formula behind the scenes: your investment minus the buy-side fee tells you how much capital actually converts into coins. Divide that by the buy price to get coins purchased. Multiply coins purchased by the sell price to get gross proceeds, then subtract the sell-side fee to get net proceeds. Net proceeds minus your original investment is your profit or loss.

Quick Example

You invest $1,000 in Bitcoin at $60,000 with a 0.5% fee on both legs. After the buy-side fee, $995 converts into about 0.01658 BTC. If Bitcoin rises to $75,000 and you sell, your gross proceeds are about $1,244, and after the 0.5% sell-side fee, net proceeds are roughly $1,238 — a profit of about $238, or 23.8% ROI.

What Fees Should You Include?

Most centralized exchanges charge a taker or maker fee somewhere between 0.1% and 0.6% per trade, applied separately when you buy and again when you sell. That means a 0.5% fee is really closer to 1% of round-trip cost. This calculator applies your fee percentage on both legs automatically, so the break-even price already reflects the full round-trip cost rather than understating it. If your exchange uses a maker/taker split or offers fee discounts for holding a native token, use your effective blended rate for the most accurate result.

Tax Disclaimer

This calculator estimates gross trading profit and loss only — it does not calculate taxes. In most jurisdictions, selling or swapping crypto is a taxable event, and the rate you owe depends on how long you held the asset, your income bracket, and local tax law. Nothing on this page is tax or financial advice. Before you file, confirm your specific obligations with a qualified accountant or tax professional in your country.

What Is a Realistic Profit Target Per Cycle?

There is no honest, guaranteed number here — crypto cycles vary wildly, and past performance does not predict the next one. Historically, large-cap assets like Bitcoin have produced returns ranging from modest to several multiples of the original investment across a full four-year cycle, with 70-85% drawdowns along the way being entirely normal. Rather than anchoring to a specific percentage, use this calculator to stress-test different exit prices against your actual cost basis, and pair it with a full backtest using the DCA Simulator to see how a recurring plan would have performed instead of a single trade.

DCA vs. a Single Trade

This calculator is built for a single buy-and-sell scenario — useful when you already hold a position and want to model an exit, or when you are planning one specific entry. Most long-term crypto investors instead spread purchases across weeks or months to reduce the risk of a single bad-timed entry. If you want to see how a recurring schedule would have performed historically rather than a one-off trade, run the same numbers through the Alpha Factory DCA Calculator, which backtests weekly or monthly buys on 1,000+ coins using real historical price data since 2014.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate profit on a crypto trade?

Subtract your total cost (including any buy-side fee) from your total proceeds (including any sell-side fee). Divide that profit or loss by your original investment to get ROI as a percentage.

Does this calculator account for taxes?

No. It estimates gross trading profit and loss only. Confirm your actual tax obligations with a qualified accountant — rates vary by holding period, income, and jurisdiction.

Why do exchange fees matter so much?

Fees apply on both the buy and sell leg, so a 0.5% fee effectively costs about 1% of your position round-trip. On smaller gains, fees can meaningfully cut into profit.

What is a realistic profit target per crypto cycle?

There is no guaranteed number. Historical cycles have ranged from modest to multiple-x returns with significant drawdowns. Treat any target as something to stress-test, not a promise.

Should I use DCA or a single lump-sum trade?

This tool models a single trade. For a recurring investment schedule, backtest it with the DCA Simulator instead, which spreads timing risk across many entries.

What is a break-even price and how is it calculated here?

The sell price at which your net proceeds, after both fee legs, equal your original investment. This calculator computes it directly from your buy price, investment amount, and fee percentage.
