Banking Sector Safe From Stablecoin Disruption—For Now, Moody's Says

The stablecoin threat to traditional banking remains overstated in the near term, but don't mistake stability for immunity. That's the takeaway from Moody's Investors Service, which recently assessed how crypto's fastest-growing asset class might reshape financial markets.

The Current State: Limited but Growing

Stablecoins have already crossed a significant milestone. Their market capitalization exceeded $300 billion by year-end, representing explosive growth in the crypto ecosystem. Yet according to Abhi Srivastava, associate vice president of Moody's Digital Economy Group, this expansion hasn't dented banking deposits or lending activity—at least not yet.

"The impact of stablecoins on the banking sector appears limited at the current phase of the adoption cycle," Srivastava told Cointelegraph. The reason? US regulatory frameworks have effectively neutered the most dangerous competitive threat: yield-bearing stablecoins. Banks aren't losing deposits to products that can't compete on returns, and America's existing payment infrastructure remains fast, low-cost, and deeply trusted.

"For the banking sector, at this stage, disruption risk appears limited. In the near term, US rules that prohibit stablecoins from paying yield mean they are unlikely to replace traditional deposits at scale domestically," Srivastava explained.

The Long Game: Storm Clouds Ahead

But regulatory prohibitions only buy banks time. As both stablecoin adoption and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) continue expanding, Moody's warns of mounting pressure on the traditional banking sector. We're talking deposit outflows, reduced lending capacity, and fundamental shifts in how capital flows through the financial system.

The real battle isn't being fought in trading floors—it's happening in Congress.

Washington's Stablecoin Standoff

The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act of 2025 (CLARITY Act) was supposed to establish clear regulatory frameworks for crypto markets. Instead, it's stalled, caught between irreconcilable demands from the banking lobby and crypto industry leaders.

Yield-bearing stablecoin prohibitions became the line in the sand. Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and allied companies publicly opposed the bill's earlier drafts, citing concerns about both regulatory overreach and barriers to innovation. Meanwhile, banks viewed yield-bearing stablecoins as an existential threat to their deposit base and fought to keep restrictions in place.

North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis indicated plans to release an updated draft intended to satisfy both factions, but according to Politico, even that compromise version faced pushback and remains unreleased.

The stakes here matter. If CLARITY fails entirely, crypto industry executives warn of a regulatory vacuum that hostile lawmakers could exploit with punitive legislation down the road. That uncertainty alone creates tension across both traditional and digital finance sectors.

Alpha Take

We see a sector enjoying a regulatory reprieve that won't last indefinitely. Near-term crypto analysis shows stablecoins and RWAs remain too small to materially threaten banking sector stability, but that's precisely why action matters now. The policy outcome of the CLARITY Act debate will set the trajectory for the next five years of crypto market intelligence—expect either clarity or chaos, with little middle ground. Investors should monitor Congressional developments closely, as they'll directly shape whether stablecoins become a genuine competitive force or remain niche financial infrastructure.
