Bitcoin Breaks 10-Week Highs Above $77K as Bullish Traders Eye $88K Push

Bitcoin (BTC) surged past $77,000 on Friday, marking its highest level in ten weeks as geopolitical tensions eased and risk appetite returned to traditional markets. The move comes amid cooling macro uncertainty and record-breaking performance from equities, setting up a potential rally that crypto traders believe could reach $85-88K within weeks.

The Setup: Risk-On Environment Powers BTC Recovery

BTC refreshed February highs just as markets began pricing out geopolitical concerns. A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon helped stabilize sentiment around oil supplies and broader macro volatility. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 hit an all-time high of 7,050 points Thursday—its second record close of the week—signaling that traditional markets have moved past near-term uncertainty.

Data from TradingView confirmed Bitcoin hit $77,027 on Bitstamp, validating the ten-week peak. This price action matters because it shows BTC isn't just bouncing around—it's establishing new structural highs on reduced macro noise.

Why Traders See $88K Coming

Crypto trader Michaël van de Poppe laid out the technical case clearly: declining volatility across multiple asset classes creates the conditions for institutional capital to rotate into bitcoin. He pointed to the VIX volatility index as the key indicator. "As long as the VIX continues to fall, and we're in a new equilibrium, where oil volatility goes down, Gold volatility significantly drops," van de Poppe wrote on X, "what will you start to see? More inflows in the $BTC ETF as allocators can allocate more towards Bitcoin."

The data backs this thesis. US spot Bitcoin ETFs captured $330 million in net inflows week-to-date, per Farside Investors. That's institutional money flowing in as risk premiums compress.

Van de Poppe's conviction is strong: "I see a strong case for Bitcoin continuing the rally to $85-88K in coming 2-4 weeks." He added that ethereum and altcoins would likely follow BTC's lead higher.

Critical Level to Watch: $72,800

Analyst Rekt Capital identified $72,800 as the "pivotal" support zone for the upcoming weekly candle close. This isn't just any level—it's where Bitcoin rejected back in mid-March, and losing it triggered a deeper pullback. "If Bitcoin wants a Weekly Close above the Weekly resistance ($72,810), then price would need to hold the blue level as support on any upcoming dip," Rekt Capital explained.

The implication: watch this Friday's close. If BTC holds above $72,800 for the weekly candle, the path higher stays clear. Dip below it, and we could see Bitcoin revisit lower ranges.

The Bearish Counter-Argument

Not everyone's bullish. Trader Roman highlighted a classic warning sign: declining volume into recent highs. "We're in a macro downtrend which when we see high volume continues downward. Low volume implies consolidation/correction to continue the overall trend," Roman noted on X. "The next high volume move likely takes us lower."

This volume divergence deserves respect. When price rises on weak volume, it often signals momentum is fading rather than building.

Worth noting: crypto traders still maintain that sub-$50,000 Bitcoin represents the macro floor many are betting on for the next significant correction.

Alpha Take

Bitcoin's break above $77K combines technical strength with a improving macro backdrop—declining volatility, institutional ETF inflows, and risk-on sentiment. The $72,800 weekly support level becomes the line in sand for whether this rally extends toward $88K or rolls over. Watch Friday's close carefully; it'll tell us whether volume is truly backing this move or if Roman's volume divergence warning has merit for portfolio management.
