Bitcoin Eyes $78K-$80K Zone as Analysts Flag 'Significant Room to Run'

Bitcoin has shifted into bullish territory at $76,000, and the technical setup suggests the rally has legs—but traders are already pinpointing where the upside could stall.
We're watching a textbook momentum setup. Bitcoin's short-term holder (STH) supply in profit—essentially measuring how many recent buyers are sitting on gains—currently stands at 43.2%, well below the historical mean of 54.2% where distribution typically intensifies. That gap signals the bear market rally hasn't exhausted itself yet, according to Glassnode's latest Week Onchain analysis.
"This leaves slight room for further upside toward the True Market Mean, while also providing a quantitative level to monitor as price advances," Glassnode noted, underscoring that we're not in dangerous distribution territory just yet.
Key Resistance Levels Emerging
Analyst McKenna flagged a critical technical indicator: Bitcoin remains in "deep under extension" relative to its 50-week simple moving average at $96,800. When markets deviate this far from their mean, mean reversion becomes a powerful force. Combined with the bullish momentum signals firing, McKenna sees mid-to-high $80s as a realistic target.
"BTC breaking above $74K and holding this level on a HTF is the final trigger I want to see to be confident in mid to high 80s over the coming weeks," McKenna said on X.
The immediate resistance cluster centers on onchain cost basis levels. Bitcoin's active realized price sits at $85,100, while the STH cost basis is at $80,950. Most notably, the true market mean currently registers at $78,140—and that's where over 200,000 BTC were acquired according to cost basis distribution data. That concentration makes it a serious resistance zone.
Dollar Weakness Could Be the Catalyst
Fellow analyst Bitcoin Archive highlighted a potential tailwind: the falling US dollar index. A weakening greenback has historically provided "massive tailwind for the next leg up" for Bitcoin and the broader crypto market intelligence community should be monitoring DXY moves closely as a leading indicator.
Support to Mind on Dips
We need to keep eyes on the downside too. The first major support lies at $72,000, where the 20-day and 50-day exponential moving averages converge—a zone where approximately 220,000 BTC were purchased. Below that, the $65,000-$70,000 band represents critical demand. This area functioned as a launching pad during October-January's rally, and a break below $70,000 would signal bears are reasserting control, potentially opening the door to $60,000.
Bitcoin's 41% drawdown from its $126,000 all-time high has created a technical structure traders can actually work with. The price is currently 5.2% below the true market mean—a manageable gap that suggests higher prices remain probable in the medium term.
Alpha Take
We're seeing genuine bullish structure here, not just noise. The STH supply metric combined with mean reversion dynamics suggests Bitcoin has concrete reasons to push toward $78,000-$80,000 before facing serious selling pressure. Watch the US dollar index as a confirming signal: if DXY continues weakening, the tailwinds accelerate upward. Key risk: a failure to hold $72,000 flips the narrative back to bears.
