Bybit Bets Big on Malaysia's Crypto Future With $8M Hata Investment

Bybit is doubling down on Southeast Asia's crypto opportunity. The world's fifth-largest crypto exchange by trading volume just led an $8 million Series A funding round for Hata, a dual-licensed digital asset platform operating in Malaysia. This follows Bybit's earlier $4.2 million seed investment, signaling serious conviction in the region's long-term potential.

What Hata Does—And Why It Matters

Hata operates under dual licenses from Malaysia's Securities Commission and the Labuan Financial Services Authority, a regulatory advantage that lets it offer both trading and custody services for digital assets. Since launching in 2023, the platform has attracted over 209,000 registered users and processed 1.04 billion Malaysian ringgits (roughly $225 million) in transaction volume during 2025. Those numbers validate the market opportunity.

The fresh capital will fuel three core initiatives: improving liquidity depth, expanding the user base, and building out additional digital asset products. For Bybit, it's a calculated play to capture trading volumes in one of Southeast Asia's most digitally engaged populations.

Ben Zhou, Hata's co-founder and CEO, frames Malaysia as "strategically important" with "strong long-term potential for digital asset adoption." Translation: there's real runway here as regulatory clarity improves and adoption accelerates.

Malaysia's Crypto Regulatory Playbook

This funding doesn't happen in a vacuum. Malaysia has been actively building out its digital asset regulatory infrastructure through a structured roadmap.

Last June, the country launched its Digital Asset Innovation Hub—essentially a regulatory sandbox where fintech firms and digital asset companies can test use cases including programmable payments, ringgit-backed stablecoins, and supply chain financing under central bank supervision. During the same month, a Malaysian telecom company (owned by Crown Prince Ismail Ibrahim) launched RMJDT, a ringgit-backed stablecoin, on the Zetrix blockchain through this sandbox framework.

The momentum accelerated in November when Bank Negara Malaysia unveiled a three-year tokenization roadmap that includes pilots for tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and cross-border settlement. The central bank is coordinating with the Securities Commission Malaysia to address regulatory and legal gaps. Most recently, sandbox pilots focusing on ringgit-backed stablecoins and tokenized bank deposits attracted institutional participation from Standard Chartered, CIMB Group, and Maybank.

This isn't theoretical—it's operational infrastructure being built right now.

Bybit's Expanding Regional Footprint

Malaysia isn't Bybit's only growth frontier. The exchange is simultaneously pushing deeper into the Middle East despite regional tensions. In March, Bybit appointed Derek Dai as country manager for the MENA region to spearhead expansion and forge partnerships. Dai emphasized that the Middle East is emerging as a critical crypto market, with Bybit planning to expand UAE dirham access and build relationships with regional banks and payment providers.

The strategy is clear: lock in market share in high-potential regions before competitors establish dominant positions.

Alpha Take

Bybit's aggressive funding of Hata signals that major crypto exchanges see Malaysia as a genuine growth market—not just hype. The combination of regulatory clarity, an engaged population, and institutional infrastructure (sandboxes, central bank pilots, stablecoin frameworks) creates real catalysts for adoption. This is how emerging crypto markets develop: regulatory frameworks attract quality platforms, which attract liquidity, which attracts users. Watch Malaysia's tokenization pilots closely; early success could accelerate adoption across Southeast Asia.
