Fragmented Stablecoin Liquidity Is Creating an Onchain FX Market—And It's Messy for Big Players

Stablecoins promise frictionless dollar movement across blockchains. The reality? Liquidity fragmentation is turning institutional transfers into complex execution headaches, according to Eco CEO Ryne Saxe.

The Problem: Stablecoins Aren't Actually Fungible

Here's what we're seeing: while stablecoins are pegged to the dollar, they don't behave like a unified asset. Instead, liquidity splinters across issuers, blockchains, and DeFi venues—each with its own depth, pricing, and access conditions. The crypto market has pushed stablecoin capitalization above $320 billion, dominated by Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC, but that growth masks a fundamental structural issue.

"Stablecoins, between them, aren't very fungible," Saxe told us. "The different profiles between those markets mean pricing and moving stablecoins seamlessly and efficiently across them is actually a hard problem that people take for granted."

In theory, a dollar stablecoin should be a dollar stablecoin everywhere. In practice, collateral differences, market access variations, and liquidity depth disparities create measurable pricing gaps. For small retail trades, these gaps are negligible. For institutional-sized transfers? They become material fast.

Where Pricing Gaps Actually Show Up

A March report from payments startup Borderless tracked buy and sell rates across 66 stablecoin-to-fiat corridors spanning 33 currencies and seven blockchains throughout February. The data revealed that USDC and USDT trade at near-identical prices in most corridors—with 91% of pairs within 10 basis points. But here's the kicker: at the provider level, pricing gaps in the same corridor can exceed hundreds of basis points.

That's where execution quality becomes dependent on where you source liquidity and how you route across venues. Small differences compound when you're moving serious size.

Institutions Face Real Constraints

Stablecoins have become central infrastructure for institutional crypto adoption. Banks use them for cross-border payments, trading settlement, and onchain treasury management. Some institutions, like Societe Generale with their euro-backed token, are even issuing their own stablecoins. But moving tens of millions of dollars requires speed, predictability, and efficiency—three things fragmented liquidity doesn't guarantee.

"If liquidity is spread out, trying to sell $10 million of one stablecoin and buy $10 million of another in a single step will move the market," Saxe explained. The workaround is breaking transactions into multiple branches routed across different chains and pools, introducing execution uncertainty and market impact.

The current market structure mirrors foreign exchange—where dollar proxies circulate across disconnected markets rather than functioning as a unified asset. Institutions navigating this environment must juggle multiple chains, issuers, and venues simultaneously, each with different liquidity conditions and risk profiles.

"Right now, they don't have the risk management, trust and infrastructure that they need to move or hold a lot of stablecoins at size onchain by default," Saxe said.

Alpha Take

The stablecoin market's liquidity fragmentation is creating real execution friction for institutional traders and portfolio managers moving significant capital. This fragmentation represents both a market inefficiency and an opportunity for platforms building cross-chain liquidity aggregation. As crypto adoption accelerates, expect this infrastructure gap to become increasingly acute for institutions managing large treasury positions across DeFi venues.
