Major Ethereum Foundation Researcher Josh Stark Steps Down After Five Years

Josh Stark, a prominent researcher and project manager at the Ethereum Foundation, announced his departure from the non-profit organization steering Ethereum's development on Thursday. His exit marks the most significant high-profile departure from the Foundation since the organization underwent major structural changes in early 2025.

Stark, who held a management-level position overseeing key initiatives within the Foundation, offered limited details about his decision to leave. In a post on X, he stated he has "no plans for the future" and will use this time to step back from his professional responsibilities to reconnect with family and friends. Interestingly, he chose to frame his departure by reflecting on Ethereum's achievements rather than explaining his own reasons for leaving:

"The Ethereum ecosystem has reliably done things the world told us were impossible. It is easy to forget how much real fear and doubt there was that Ethereum would never launch, that decentralized finance (DeFi) would never work, or that Proof of Stake would never ship."

Cointelegraph reached out to Stark for additional context regarding his departure, but did not receive a response before publication.

A Wave of Leadership Changes at Ethereum Foundation

Stark's departure follows a broader reshuffling of the Ethereum Foundation's leadership structure. Just a day prior, another Foundation contributor, Trent Van Epps, announced his resignation. This wave of departures has intensified scrutiny on the organization following Vitalik Buterin's announcement of sweeping leadership restructuring in January 2025.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin introduced significant changes aimed at addressing mounting criticism from the Ethereum community about the protocol's long-term trajectory. His reform agenda emphasized recruiting "fresh" talent to strengthen the organization, promoting greater decentralization, and improving transaction throughput and speed across the network.

However, Buterin was explicit about boundaries: the revamped Ethereum Foundation would not engage in ideological disputes, lobby US lawmakers, or champion "vested interests." He remarked: "These things aren't what EF does, and this isn't going to change. People seeking a different vision are welcome to start their own orgs."

New Leadership Structure Takes Shape

The Foundation officially announced new co-directors in March 2025. Hsiao-Wei Wang, an established Ethereum Foundation researcher, and Tomasz Stańczak, CEO of Nethermind (a major Ethereum execution client), were brought in to lead the organization's new direction. However, this leadership model proved short-lived. Stańczak stepped down from his role in February 2026, leaving Wang as the remaining member of the Foundation's management board according to current organizational charts.

These transitions underscore ongoing tension within the Ethereum ecosystem regarding governance, resource allocation, and strategic priorities.

Alpha Take

Stark's departure, combined with recent exits from other Foundation contributors, signals potential internal friction despite—or perhaps because of—Buterin's restructuring efforts. Watch whether these departures impact Ethereum's protocol development roadmap or signal broader discord about the Foundation's evolving role. For portfolio managers holding concentrated Ethereum positions, tracking leadership stability at the Foundation remains a critical macro indicator for long-term ecosystem health.
