Over a Third of European Investors Ready to Ditch Banks for Crypto Access

A Börse Stuttgart Digital survey has revealed a significant shift in European banking preferences: 35% of investors would switch banks for better cryptocurrency offerings. This data point matters because it signals that crypto is becoming a genuine differentiator in how people choose financial institutions—not just a niche feature anymore.

The Crypto Banking Gap is Real

The survey polled roughly 6,000 investors across Germany, Italy, Spain, and France, and the results are striking. Nearly one in five respondents expect their primary bank to offer crypto access within three years. That's not casual interest—that's customer demand signaling to traditional finance that they need to move on crypto or risk losing deposits.

Here's where it gets interesting for market intelligence: this isn't just early adopters talking. These are mainstream investors already managing relationships with established banks. The fact that over a third would switch suggests crypto access is becoming table stakes in competitive banking, especially as the regulatory landscape clarifies.

MiCA Changed the Game

The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) went live December 30, 2024, and we're already seeing its impact on investor psychology. Nearly half of surveyed investors said MiCA increased their trust in digital assets, viewing the framework as making crypto "safer and more attractive."

This is crucial context: 76% still view crypto as insufficiently regulated, and over 60% admit they're poorly informed about digital assets. MiCA is addressing the first problem. The second problem—education—remains a work in progress, but at least regulatory clarity is removing one major barrier to portfolio allocation.

Matthias Voelkel, CEO of Börse Stuttgart Group, nailed it: "Trust and clear regulation are essential for the next phase of crypto adoption in Europe. With MiCAR bringing transparency and legal certainty, investors gain the clarity they expect."

Spain Leads Adoption; Russia Dominates Volume

Geography matters here. Spain showed the highest adoption rate among the surveyed countries at 28% of investors already holding crypto. Germany came in second at 25%, followed by Italy (24%) and France (23%). Overall, 25% of respondents have already invested in crypto, with another 36% likely to invest within five years.

But here's the caveat: adoption rates don't tell the whole story. According to Chainalysis data from October 2025, Russia leads European crypto markets with $376 billion in value received (July 2024–June 2025), followed by the UK ($273 billion) and Germany ($219 billion). This suggests that while Western European adoption is climbing, Eastern Europe—particularly Russia—maintains outsized market volume.

Meanwhile, Börse Stuttgart Digital itself became the first German crypto asset service provider to secure an EU-wide MiCA license through its custody subsidiary in January 2025, positioning itself as regulated infrastructure for banks, brokers, and asset managers. This signals how traditional finance is integrating deeper into crypto infrastructure.

Alpha Take

European investors are ready for mainstream crypto banking integration, and MiCA is removing regulatory friction that previously blocked institutional adoption. The 35% willing to switch banks for crypto access represents real competitive pressure on legacy institutions. Watch for accelerating bank partnerships with crypto service providers and custody solutions—this infrastructure buildout will likely precede major retail crypto portfolio shifts across Europe.
