Philippine Regulators Crack Down on dYdX and Six Unauthorized Crypto Platforms

The Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) just dropped a major warning: seven crypto trading platforms are operating illegally in the country, and anyone promoting them could face serious consequences.

The Warning Shot

On Tuesday, the SEC called out dYdX, Aevo, gTrade, Pacifica, Orderly, Deriv, and Ostium as unauthorized crypto service providers. The regulator's core complaint is straightforward—these platforms are soliciting Filipino investors without proper registration or licensing under the country's crypto-asset service provider (CASP) framework.

Here's where it gets real: promoters pushing these platforms could face fines up to 5 million Philippine pesos (roughly $89,000) or up to 21 years in prison under the Securities Regulation Code. We're not talking slaps on the wrist here. The SEC is signaling it will pursue criminal charges under Sections 28 and 73 of Philippine securities law.

The CASP framework itself requires firms to obtain licenses and meet strict capital and operational requirements before offering any crypto-related services. None of the flagged platforms meet those standards.

Enforcement is Getting Real

This latest advisory reflects a hardening regulatory stance. The Philippines isn't issuing warnings anymore—they're moving to actual access restrictions. On December 24, 2025, Philippine authorities didn't just warn investors about Coinbase and Gemini; they blocked them outright.

The timeline tells the story of escalating action:

2024: Binance faced a compliance deadline crackdown. Regulators directed app stores to remove the platform's app from users' devices.

August 2025: The SEC named 10 additional exchanges—OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, and Kraken among them—for operating without registration. The message was clear: unlicensed operations won't be tolerated.

December 2025: Coinbase and Gemini get blocked.

Now: Seven more platforms face the spotlight.

The Compliant Path Forward

Despite the crackdown on unlicensed operators, the Philippines' crypto market isn't dying. It's consolidating around authorized players. In 2025, PDAX partnered with Toku to enable stablecoin salary payouts—a real use case gaining traction. Meanwhile, digital bank GoTyme launched crypto services with Alpaca, letting users buy and hold digital assets directly within the app.

This creates a two-tier market: compliant platforms building legitimate services versus unauthorized platforms operating in a legal gray zone. The SEC is forcing investors and traders to choose sides, and the regulatory consequences are severe enough that operating without a license is becoming genuinely risky.

Alpha Take

The Philippines is executing a textbook regulatory playbook: warnings, then access blocks, then criminal enforcement. If you're holding assets on any of these seven platforms and operate in the Philippines, it's time to consider exit strategies. The CASP framework isn't going away, and regulators have shown they'll follow through on enforcement threats. For traders seeking legitimate crypto exposure, the compliant alternatives (PDAX, GoTyme) are your safer bets in this jurisdiction.
