Zonda Exchange Faces $334M Bitcoin Access Crisis as Withdrawal Panic Intensifies

Zonda exchange is sitting on a cold wallet containing approximately 4,500 BTC—worth roughly $334 million—but can't access it. That's the bombshell admission from CEO Przemysław Kral, who released a video statement Thursday revealing the wallet address while claiming the private keys were never transferred from the exchange's missing founder.

The Missing Keys Problem

Here's the core issue: founder and former CEO Sylwester Suszek disappeared in March 2022, taking the private keys to the cold wallet with him. Kral insists this wasn't an inside job, arguing that if he'd stolen the funds, Suszek would have resurfaced by now. "So for all those who claim that I had anything to do with Sylwester's disappearance, this is the prime argument that I care the most about Sylwester being found," Kral stated in his video.

The wallet's last recorded transaction dates back to November 2025, according to blockchain data. This public disclosure marks the first time Zonda has officially confirmed the wallet address during the ongoing controversy.

Withdrawal Surge Triggered Crisis

The exchange's troubles accelerated after blockchain analysis platform Recoveris flagged potential insolvency concerns on April 6, citing sharp drops in Zonda's hot wallet balances. That triggered a panic. Kral now claims Zonda typically processes around 100,000 withdrawal requests annually—but received more than 25,000 in just hours and days following negative media coverage. The spike in crypto trading activity and withdrawal pressure overwhelmed the platform's capacity.

Rather than admit operational failure, Kral blamed the media firestorm for driving abnormal withdrawal demand and promised legal action against those spreading "false claims" about the exchange's solvency.

Political Heat Mounting

Polish lawmaker Tomasz Mentzen suggested on X that Zonda permanently lost access to its cold wallet when Suszek vanished. That interpretation carries serious implications for customer funds and overall portfolio stability. The situation has drawn unwanted attention to Poland's crypto regulatory environment, especially as the country grapples with EU-wide Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) implementation delays.

Zonda—originally founded as BitBay in Poland in 2014—rebranded in 2021 and registered operations in Estonia due to regulatory uncertainty back home. This jurisdictional complexity now complicates any potential recovery efforts or regulatory intervention.

The missing founder, connected to alleged criminal ties among certain shareholders, has become the center of a broader scandal that's intensifying scrutiny of Poland's entire crypto sector. Kral insists the exchange remains fully solvent and will meet all customer obligations, but without access to that 4,500 BTC cold wallet, those promises ring hollow for nervous traders.

Alpha Take

Zonda's situation reveals a critical risk in centralized crypto trading: single points of failure around key management. The 4,500 BTC access issue represents a genuine solvency concern that goes beyond hot wallet analysis—this is permanent capital loss unless Suszek surfaces or alternative recovery methods emerge. Watch for regulatory action from Polish authorities; this case will likely accelerate MiCA enforcement and stricter custody standards across European exchanges. For traders, this is a reminder to verify exchange capital reserves and cold wallet structures before depositing significant positions.
